Aces History
The Senior Aces started in April 1993. It was named by Ralph Wefel. The ACES acronym is for Adult Computer Education Society the name was approved by 15 people who met for a number of weeks doing the planning.
The group of individuals wanted to help Seniors with computer software tutoring & general help with hardware.
The group was started by 2 members Ed Danehy and Bill Stites of the RASCALS Computer Club in Grants Pass actually being credited as the founder's of the ACES. Other founding members being Ken Kugler & John Cherry. The first chairman was Lynn Womack.
The first meetings were held at the Enid Rankin Center also known as the Medford Senior Center before moving on to other locations, board committee chairs, and interested members, met every week (not the general meeting) for a period of time until club activities and computer classes were running smoothly. Hands-on Meetings were held at The Mary Phipps Center.
The preceding Chairpersons in order; Forrest Hawk, Tom Lowe, Phyllis Kennedy, Shena Polehn, Florence Bohnert, Gene Baker, Jim MacKenzie, Cliff Beck, Arne Kvist, Bud Kemp, Don Haag and fellow computer friends Neva Hastings, Betty Cox, & Ralph Wefel. Early Members were; Doris Chicano, Phyllis Kennedy, Ric Thowless, and they are still hanging in there helping new members to this day.
The Group did not grow very fast at first, but the members knew it was a good idea. It has grown at a fever pitch in the last few years till the membership is now at 331 as of 11-16-2003 although the membership varies a bit its always growing. The group has members from all over the Rogue Valley from Prospect, Shady Cove, Grants Pass to Williams and south to the town of Ashland.
The attendance in Medford has grown till there is approximately 100-150 members participating each meeting sometimes even more.
Membership in Ashland is about 50 average each meeting. Most of members in Ashland are PC. users but there are more Mac-Intosh users in Ashland than in Medford. Approximately 25% of the members use Mac's in Ashland.
